The City of Cape Town is offering an exciting opportunity for unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34 to join its Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme 2025 / 2026. This comprehensive programme provides practical and theoretical training in Road Traffic Law Enforcement, empowering participants with skills to build a rewarding career in public safety.

The training will take place at the City’s Public Safety Training College over an 18-month period, starting on 07 January 2026.

📘 Programme Overview

This learnership aims to develop qualified and disciplined traffic and law enforcement officers who will contribute to safer roads and communities in Cape Town. Trainees will complete the Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC): Road Traffic Law Enforcement, as well as the Law Enforcement Skills Programme (SP4/2012).

Participants will undergo intensive classroom instruction, physical training, and on-the-job exposure within the City’s Metro Police and Traffic Services departments.

🎓 Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this learnership, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate – documentary proof required.
  • Must be a permanent resident within the City of Cape Town (proof required).
  • Proficiency in English and at least one other official South African language.
  • Unemployed at the time of application. (Students and EPWP staff may apply.)
  • Age: Between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Must be medically and physically fit for strenuous training.
  • Must have no criminal record.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s licence (minimum Code B, manual transmission).
  • Must have no visible tattoos while wearing the official uniform.
  • Must be able to work under pressurecope with stressful situations, and function effectively in a team environment.

Applicants are encouraged to ensure they are aware of their health status before the physical fitness assessments, as this training is physically demanding.

🏋️‍♂️ Compulsory Fitness Assessments

All shortlisted candidates will be required to pass the following physical tests as part of the selection process. These tests are elimination-based, meaning failure to meet the required standard in one stage disqualifies applicants from continuing to the next.

Fitness Tests Include:

  1. 2.4 km Run: Males – 11 minutes; Females – 13 minutes.
  2. Push-ups (1 minute): 30 repetitions (both males and females).
  3. Sit-ups (1 minute): 30 repetitions (both males and females).
  4. Dead Load Carry: 100m carrying 2 x 25kg weights (one in each hand).
  5. Tyre Drag: 20m distance.
  6. 20m Shuttle Runs: 10 shuttles within 60 seconds.
  7. Wall Climb: 2.1 metres (both males and females).
  8. Motorcycle Reach Test.
  9. Comfort Swim: Any stroke, unassisted.

⚠️ Note: Due to the physically demanding nature of these assessments, pregnant applicants will not be allowed to participate in the fitness tests.

🧠 Additional Selection Assessments

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements and pass the physical fitness tests will be required to complete additional assessments, including:

  • written assessment and formal interview.
  • Fingerprint and identity verification for criminal record checks (no external clearance accepted).
  • City medical evaluation and compulsory drug test.
  • Driver assessment to confirm practical driving ability.

All successful applicants will be required to adhere to the Code of Conduct of the Public Safety Training College, as well as the pass requirements stipulated by the institution and relevant unit standards.
